The dream began in July of 2007, when Travis, Lori, Anna and Allison Hawk visited our church on their way back to El Sembrador, Honduras. About 10 church members gathered at our home to hear the story of how God called Don Hawk to the jungles of Honduras to begin a school for underprivileged boys of Honduras. . . and how over the years, generations of the Hawk family have served the Lord there. Don and Twana, along with their 6 children (4 of whom were born in Honduras), were keenly aware of God's voice and obeyed His call to leave all behind and GO to an unknown land to win souls for Christ. Two generations later, the call is still real and Don's grandson, Travis is carrying on the work begun in 1948.
After visiting with Travis (my nephew!) and his wife Lori, our church became excited about what God is doing in Honduras. We wanted to support a missionary family that we could maintain personal contact with and stay informed about what God was doing in their lives and their station of ministry. Travis invited us to consider coming down to Honduras on a work team. He shared the dream of the boys to learn about American football. Since Cooper is chairman of the Outreach committee --- AND head football coach at AHS! --- his interest was kindled! Travis told of the need for work teams to come and help with construction and remodeling projects.
After Travis and Lori left, we "polled" the congregation to determine if there was interest in going to Honduras on a work team. About 20 people indicated an interest in a project like that! So . . . plans were set in motion to take a team "down to the farm" in the summer of 2009! I was asked to "lead" the team and so I began making preparations and gathering information about how we were to proceed. Immediately, my brother-in-law, Ted Hawk (Travis' dad) said he would like to go with us! I was elated! I knew that with God's help, most of all, and with Ted's, I could do this! My/our adventure began, and it is one I will treasure for for the rest of my life!
